THE CHURCH AND THE HOTDOG STAND
A man lived by the side of the road, selling hot dogs. He was hard of hearing, so he had no radio. His eyes were so bad that he could not read the newspaper or watch TV. But, he could sell hot dogs.
He put up a sign on the road telling people how good his hot dogs were, while at the same time with a pleading voice he would be asking those passing by, "Buy a hot dog, Mister?" And people bought hot dogs.
He increased his business and a larger stand had to be purchased. He even brought his son back home from college to help him. But then, something happened!
His son said, "Father, haven't you been listening to the radio or watching TV or reading the paper? If money stays as tight as it is, we're bound to have bad business. There may even be a depression coming on soon. You'd better prepare yourself for the worst." The father thought, "Well, my son has been to college, and reads the papers, watches TV and listens to the radio. He ought to know what's going to happen in the business world."
So the father cut down on his meat and bun orders. He even took down his advertising sign and no longer stood by the road crying, "Buy a hot dog, mister?" Hot dog sales dropped overnight. He said, "You are right, son. We certainly are headed for hard times."
Now this little story illustrates how most of the world functions. Expect bad things. Prepare for bad things. Bad things will happen. Why in the world don't we start practicing just the opposite? EXPECT GREAT THINGS. PREPARE FOR GREAT THINGS. GREAT THINGS WILL HAPPEN! There are some terrific opportunities coming up in the next several weeks that we need to be praying, planning and participating in. This weekend we have had over 70 people at Short Mountain for a Back-To-School Retreat because of this very attitude. There is the Men's Retreat on October 1-2 at Red Boiling Springs, our Homecoming and Gospel Meeting October 3-6, Teens4Christ on October 3, the Father/Grandfather and Son/Grandson Retreat at the Darrah's cabin on Dry Creek October 22-23, the Ladies Retreat at Red Boiling Springs November 5-6.
Let me encourage you to get more involved in the church's activities. I am especially excited about our Homecoming, Gospel Meeting and Teens4Christ. Mike Tanaro will do a G-R-E-A-T job in presenting the gospel and that Sunday evening we will be hosting teens from the surrounding area. This will set a new attendance record for us here at Smithville. I hope you will be a part of it. Keep on teaching, preaching and living the old, old story!
