SIZE UP THE SITUATION
The women of a New York church, eager to help a missionary newly assigned to an Indian leper colony, were thrilled with the mountains of fabric spread before them. For four weeks they had collected old sheets from the people at their church and carefully cut each sheet into eight inch strips. Finally, they packaged and mailed the fabric. The new missionary could distribute them as bandages for the Indian lepers.
Two weeks later the sheet fragments arrived in India, and the American missionary joyfully passed out to his new Indian friends the carefully cut and rolled bandages. Delighted, the men and women of the leper colony gathered together with all of their new fabric bandages. One woman held up a fabric strip and enthusiastically proclaimed, "You know, if we sew these together we'll have some pretty good sheets!"
Everyday there are people around us who have needs. Many times these needs are rather obvious. But in the process of evaluating the situation we over simplify or we try to analyze. Therefore, we don't really give the people what they need, which many times is the simple gospel. Isn't that what James said in James 2:14-16 - "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, 'depart in peace, be warmed and filled, ' but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body,, what does it profit? "
Let's take the time to look around and see the needs of others and give them what they need!
