Quit Doin’ Nothin’

Someone told the story about a Bible camp in Mississippi where a woman came to the front during a worship service.  She was bitterly weeping and confessed to the preacher, “I ain’t been doin’ nuthin’ ‘round here, and I’m fixen to stop it!”  Have you ever been guilty of “not doin’ nuthin’?”  Some people make the tragic mistake of thinking that being right with God is simply a matter of not doing things like cursing, smoking, being a drunkard, committing adultery, etc.  While these things are certainly important to consider, it is sobering and challenging to realize that Jesus once taught that a man was lost on the solitary basis that he simply didn’t do anythng.  Matthew 25: 14-30 tells the parable of the five, two, and one talent servants.  When the master in the parable returned and required his servants to give account for talents he had given them, the one-talent man leaned on a limp excuse, “I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground.  Look, there you have what is yours.”  (25: 25).  If this guy thought he was on safe ground, his master quickly burst his bubble.  He called the do-nothing servant “wicked and lazy” (25:26), and said, “Cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness.  There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (25: 30).  Jesus’ main point was that some are sinning not by what they are doing, but precisely by what they are not doing.  He was warning those who aren’t doing, anything to quit it!

Once I saw a church bulletin that had the following:

You don’t see it?  Well, it’s there!

The article went on to point out that the above space contained all a sinner has to do to be lost; all a church member has to do to become a backslider and be lost; all the church work one needs to do to become useless to Christ’s cause; all the rich man did to help Lazarus; all that God gets from some members of His church today in the way of giving and labor.  IT CONTAINS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!  What are you doing for the Lord?  If you aren’t doing anything, then quit doing nothing today!  “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.  Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”  (Galatians 6: 9-10)
