Mexico Mission Trip Cancelled

We received word on Monday that we were going to have to cancel our trip to Mexico this summer as the violence seems to escalate. Brother Rick Owens sent a newsletter stating rather emphatically that they will no longer be taking groups into Mexico. An excerpt from the letter is as follows:

The situation in Mexico continues to deteriorate. It is not stable and I no longer feel confident that our groups will be safe. The violence is escalating and spreading. There is no way to exaggerate how bad things have gotten. No one could have dreamed that this would happen and I have no idea how or when it will end.

For 22 years we have worked all over Mexico. Thousands of Americans came every year and we worked all over the country...22 years ...nobody hurt or killed. That is how it is going to end

If you were planning on coming to Mexico, I advise you not to do it. If you have reservations, I recommend you cancel them now. Mexico is not safe. I still do not know of any church groups who have had problems. BUT, I now believe it is a matter of time until something is likely to happen. There is nothing we have accomplished or could accomplish that is worth having a group get hurt or killed

I have several projects that I am going to finish. At my age, 63, it will take the time I had planned to work, just to finish. The work that is left will be done using Mexican labor. I will not take any more American groups into Mexico. Last year over half of our groups cancelled and did not work with us for fear of instability in Mexico. This year the number of cancellations was over 80%. I have been in and out of Mexico since Jan. 5th Things continue to spiral downward It is obvious that our program cannot continue as it was. Our work is and was important and people will be hurt when we stop. BUT, IT IS NOT SAFE TO CONTINUE THE WORK.

TO ALL OF YOU...EACH AND EVERY PERSON WHO HAS COME TO MEXICO OVER THE YEARS, MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR HIS CHURCH IN MEXICO! SHERRY AND I ARE BLESSED TO KNOW YOU AND TO HAVE SERVED WITH YOU!

It is sad that this work has been halted. Hopefully it is only temporary. However, we must go on. And we are in the process of trying to find some suitable work in the U.S. to take its place this summer. If you have any suggestions please let me or Rob Willingham know as soon as you can.

For His Cause,
Tim Woodward
