Jesus - God’s Wonder Baby

Yakov Smirnoff is a comedian who emigrated to the United States from the USSR. One of his most famous jokes has to do with the first time he went to a grocery store in America. He saw a package of powdered milk — you just add water, and you get milk. Next he saw powdered orange juice — just add water, and you get orange juice. Then he saw baby powder and thought to himself, "What a country!" Please humor the jump-off here, but we might express a similar kind of wonder when we read the story of Jesus' birth and subsequent events in Matthew 1:18-25 and on into the first twelve verses of Matthew chapter two. An angel from God tells a bewildered Joseph that his betrothed wife (or fiancÚ) Mary, a virgin, is pregnant "with child of the Holy Spirit" (vs 18b)! Further, the angel tells Joseph in a dream, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." Matthew goes on to explain in verses 22-23, So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, "God with us." Little wonder, then, that as Matthew chapter 2 opens we see "wise men from the East" on a search for Jesus and asking, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him" (2:1-2). When they at last find Him they acted out the equivalent of a verbal "Wow! What a Baby!" as they "fell down and worshiped Him" and then "opened their treasures" and "presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh." There is a much mystery connected with the "wise men" who sought out and worshiped Jesus even while He was still a baby. But one thing is crystal clear — they recognized the awesome and unique nature of the Son of God, even while He was a baby! They went to great lengths to find Jesus and worship Him. And by worshiping Him they remind us that I Christ is not just the Son of God — He is God the Son! What a Baby indeed! God's Wonder Baby!

A story is told of a woman who found out she was pregnant and then lit up the phone, calling and texting and telling everyone the good news. One day she took her four-year old son, Sam, out shopping. A woman asked Sam if he was excited about the coming baby. "Yes!" Sam said, "and I know what we're going to name it, too. If it's a girl we're calling her Molly. And if it's a boy, we're going to call it quits!" A scan of the Divine declarations about Jesus' birth makes clear He was a unique baby. "Call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins ... a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated 'God with us' (Matthew 1:21, 23); call His name Jesus. He will be great ... Son of the Highest ... God will give Him the throne of David ....He will reign forever ... and of His kingdom there will be no end ... Holy One ... called the Son of God (Luke 1:31-35); a Savior who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11). From the cradle to the cross, the story of Jesus is a wondrous one. It is no wonder ancient wise men worshiped Christ. The wonder is why more people don't today.
