Forest rangers seeking to assess the damage caused several years ago by forest fires in Yellowstone National Park accidentally came upon vivid testimony to God's promise of safety As described in Psalm 91:4... "He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge: His truth shall be your shield and buckler. "
One ranger found a bird that had been literally petrified in ashes, perched on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When it struck the bird, three tiny chicks scurried out from under their dead mother's wings.
The loving mother bird, keenly aware of the impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze arrived and the heat singed her small body, she remained steadfast. Because she had been willing to die, her babies under the cover of her wings would live.
Could it be that Jesus had this in mind when He said, "0 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing'"?
