Forecasting the Future

The following quotes appeared in one of the most interesting Newsweek articles I've read in years (1/27/97):

We don't like their sound.  Groups of guitars are on the way out DECCA RECORDS rejecting the Beatles, 1962.

Stocks have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau. IRVING FISHER, professor of economics, Yale  University, October 17, 1929.

Computers in the future may ... perhaps only weigh 1.5 tons.  POPULAR MECHANICS, forecasting the development of computer technology, 1949.

Believe me, Germany is unable to wage war. Former British prime minister DAVID LLOYD GEORGE, August 1, 1934.

[Television] won't be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night. DARRYL F. ZANUCK, head of  20th CenturyFox, 1946.

It is amazing how much light time sheds on human predictions! It can make fools out of us all. But what are some "predictions" we can be sure of? The Bible teaches many things that will come to pass which have not happened yet. We can believe them because they do not come from men, but from God. Here are some things I "predict."

I "PREDICT" YOU AND I WILL ONLY DIE ONCE. Millions of people today believe that we will be reincarnated, and come back in a different form to this earth. But I believe the Bible, and the Bible says it is "appointed for men to die ONCE' (Heb. 9:27). We do not have nine lives, give or takejust one.

I "PREDICT" THAT WE WILL LIVE FOREVER, SOMEWHERE. How can I be so sure? Because Jesus promised, "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (Mt. 25:46). Two groups of people will stand before Him in Judgment, and they will be divided. A large group will go to "everlasting punishment"  it will NEVER be over. The other, smaller group (Mt. 7:13,14) will go to "eternal life"  it will NEVER end!

Finally, I "PREDICT" THAT MANY WILL BELIEVE THAT HEAVEN IS THEIRS, ONLY TO BE TURNED AWAY. Jesus said as much: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity" (Mt. 7:2123). It is not true that everyone goes to heaven after they die. Jesus says those who will be in heaven are those who DO THE WILL OF THE FATHER IN HEAVEN. May that be our greatest desire in this life, and may God help us do His will as revealed in Scripture.
