ONLINE CHURCH BULLETIN
The computer website listed as stupidityawards.com reports on the "World Stupidity Awards" and purports to recognize "global achievement in stupidity and ignorance." Categories include awards for "Dumbest Moment of the Year," "Stupidest Statement of the Year," "Stupidity Award for Reckless Endangerment of the Planet," and my favorite, "Stupidity Award for Making a Stupid Situation Stupider." I know little about this website or who is behind it or what their agenda is. I do know human beings do some pretty dumb things sometimes. Like the would-be robber in Johannesburg, South Africa, who aimed his thirty-eight revolver at his intended victim during a hold-up. When the gun failed to fire, said robber, Elliot Negube, did something that only a candidate for a stupidity award could do. He peered down the barrel and tried the gun again — and this time it worked (citizenalertzablogspot.com). Stories like this one appear regularly if not frequently on the internet news services and in the "weird news"section of the paper or the "stupid criminal" reports in the magazines. Tragic though they are, these incidents remind us that common sense is sometimes most uncommon. Some people really are a pea or two short of having a full pod when it comes to making wise choices and decisions.
In Ecclesiastes 10:3 King Solomon recorded an amazing and very unpolitically correct observation along this line — "Even when a fool walks along the way, he lacks wisdom, and he shows everyone that he is a fool." Wow! Solomon obviously never attended "sensitivity training" classes. These days politicians and even preachers often use fuzzy terms that leave us wondering where we stand. But the Bible never leaves us wondering. It just hauls off and says some people are wise and some are fools! Who are these Bible fools? Psalm 14:1 says, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God' " (keep in mind this guy/gal may hold several Ph'ds!). After persecuting and being estranged from David for years, a repentant King Saul confessed and pleaded in 1 Samuel 26:21, "I have sinned. Return, my son David... Indeed I have played the fool and erred exceedingly" (see also 1 Samuel 13:13-14). David himself, after numbering the people of Israel in disobedience to God, confessed, "I have sinned greatly in what I have done... I have done very foolishly" (2"d Samuel 24:10). Jesus famously spoke of those who hear His teachings and obey them as "a wise man who built his house on a rock," and of those who hear and fail to do them as "a foolish man who built his house upon the sand" (Matthew 7:24-27). Those who tune God out are described in Romans 1:21-22 as having "foolish hearts... professing to be wise, they became fools" (Romans 1:21-22). In Luke 12:20 Jesus said God called a man a fool because he was so busy laying up treasure for himself he completely forgot about God. Ephesians 5:15, 17 calls to us — "See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise. . . Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is." These are a sampling of the things the Bible says about fools. What would God's Word say about you?
